Jul 30Re: City puts brakes on Lexington lane reduction — June 28
As a Waterloo cyclist who quite regularly cycles down Lexington Road in morning rush hour, I say there are much more important road projects to be initiated in Waterloo than narrowing the road on Lexington.
Pavement quality along the curbs and gutters of many streets is so poor that it is not safe to ride close to the curb, and in other cases the pavement quality is poor enough to make it unpleasant to drive either a bicycle or car down the street.
A more important modification to Lexington, in my eyes, is to provide a curb cut and hard surface access to the trail across from Lexington Court to allow cyclists to leave the roadway safely instead of being forced to ride down the sidewalk. There should also be signs, similar to the horse-drawn vehicle signs posted on many rural roads — “Cyclists using this roadway” with the outline of a cyclist and an arrow to the left with “One metre.”
This would be a whole lot simpler and cheaper than tearing up and narrowing a very busy thoroughfare.
