MacColl YMCA adding two lighted roadside signs – Valley Breeze
Jul 25LINCOLN – The grand opening of the newest addition to MacColl YMCA, slated for the end of August, will come with two new internally lit signs at 26 Breakneck Hill Road.
The existing sign with four-line message board at the east entrance will be removed, and one that is slightly smaller will take its place, but be set further back, 25 feet from the road. The new sign will measure 6 feet wide and 10 feet tall.
A new sign, measuring 6 feet wide and 8.5 feet tall, will be placed at the west entrance, also 25 feet from the road, where there currently is no sign. These two are among 16 new signs unanimously approved by the Zoning Board of Review in April. The others of various sizes will be placed throughout the facility.
The Planning Board recommended approval with conditions, that no LED, scrolling or flashing lights be used on the signs. Concessions had to be made to keep with the historic nature of the road, said Esselton McNulty, general director of the YMCA of Pawtucket.
While both roadside signs will be internally lit, the east entrance sign will also have a digital message board. It was meant to scroll, McNulty said, but approval was granted only if the words remain stationary.
“We had to change it a little bit to be more in keeping with the neighborhood,” McNulty said, including adding a crown molding fixture to the top of the signs to make it look more colonial.
A ribbon cutting for the $ 13 million, 51,875-square-foot facility is planned for Aug. 24, he said, and the project has been “coming along great” and on schedule.
Workers are finishing up the pool and putting down a gymnasium floor, McNulty said, and they will start bringing in equipment in the beginning of August.
