The army post was established in the year 1917 and was closed in the year 1994. This army base is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in California. The base is on Monterey Bay and has beautiful weather most of the time. After the base was closed in the year 1994; since then the area is being used by the civilians. Now the region has been converted into a residential area and is one of the ideal places for the tourists to visit.

In the year 2012, came another turning point for Fort Ord when President of America, Barack Obama, decided to make it a National Monument. The proclamation for the decision was signed by Barack Obama on 12th April 2012. This fort has a lot of historical importance. The time when the fort was closed it was the largest military base of the United States to be functioning at that time. The residents of the fort are mostly soldiers, and it is believed that almost 1.7 million American soldiers are living in that place.

The fort covers an area of about 15,000 acres.

The area has been used by bikers and hikers from a long time for their entertainment. Obama claimed that the decision of converting the fort into a National Monument will help them save the history of the base. It will be a sign of honor to all those people who lost their lives on Fort Ord. Whenever people are visiting the monument, they will learn a lot about the history of the place. Because Ford Ord was one of the largest operational military base in the United States, as at that point of time it was fully operational for military activities. Most of the space occupied by the army soldiers as they are living in Fort Ord, it is one of the cultural heritage of the United States. This decision will certainly attract more visitors to this place along with the preservation of his historical heritage.
