ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY: Chai explains the printing process in front of the printer that uses UV ink.

KUCHING: Crystal Inkjet Sdn Bhd is introducing the UV ink printing, a technology ideal for outdoor signs as the ink is three to five times more lasting than solvent-based ink.

Its shareholder Chai Yew Foo said on Saturday that the company was the first printing firm in Sarawak to have such a service.

“Normally, a sign that is printed using solvent-based ink can last for about a year under the weather of Malaysia.

“However, if UV ink is applied to the same sign, it can last three to five years as the ink is weather resistant.”

Chai explained that the UV light attached to the printing machine helps to create a membrane during the printing process.

And that membrane, he said, contributes to the lasting effect.

Although it would cost double for using UV ink, Chai believed that local consumers would gradually accept such technology.

The company, which has experience in printing services for over a decade, recently invested over RM150,000 in a UV ink printer.

“In fact, the UV ink has been widely used in West Malaysia. Due to the relatively small market in Sarawak, printing firms are reluctant to introduce the technology.

“However, we feel that it is time to introduce it to Sarawak. Someone has to take the lead, so, why not us?”
