Baffled labourers left a 20ft stretch of road unmarked when they had to work round the motor because they couldn’t find the owner.

But less than 24 hours after they filled in the gap, the flashy blue Vauxhall Astra was back.

Staff from road maintenance firm Amey had no idea who the mystery motorist was. But his antics became a talking point for locals in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.

One said: “The gap that was left was filled in when the car finally moved.

“But next morning I saw it parked in the exact same spot, bang on the yellow lines. There are ‘no vehicle’ signs and double yellows but it made no difference. It’s deliberate illegal parking and no one in the authority seems to be batting an eye.

“Everyone is talking about it because you walk past it every day in the town and it’s so blatant.” The parking spot has already been involved in a string of controversial incidents.

In 2010, a traffic warden was caught illegally parking his motor as he dished out fines to other drivers on the street.

And two police officers were carpeted after they parked their patrol car illegally for 20 minutes there while they bought breakfast last April.

North Lanarkshire Council and Strathclyde Police both declined to comment.
