After months of discussion, the Dubuque City Council has directed the Library Board of Trustees to remove the pillars on its free standing signs. The board must install either a limestone or colored concrete base no higher than 12 inches, and paint the base and sign a color that matches the Carnegie-Stout building.
The Historic Preservation Committee brought the issue to the council in December, stating the signs were installed without the proper permit or review process. The council directed the commission and the library board to meet and try to work out their differences. When that failed, the item returned to the council Monday for a final ruling.
